Character Name: Kris DreemurrSpecies: Human
Canon: Deltarune
Canon Point: End of Chapter 4 (Pacifist)
Character Age: Teenager (15-17ish)
CRAU: Nah
Character Appearance:
Ta-da. A very plain looking, racially vague human with medium-length brown hair (messy) and red eyes that are almost always cast in shadow (ominous). Usually wears a striped green sweater.
Powers and Abilities:
Kris is possessed by a supernatural entity (the Soul) that grants them several powers.
Quick note before we get into that: we don't know that much about the Soul as a character, but it is strongly implied that the Soul is a stand in for the out-of-game player. For the sake of not making things weird, I am treating the Soul as an otherworldly entity that has some knowledge of Undertale canon but is otherwise just another character within the story of Deltarune. It's confused but trying its best to fit in. In the event that the Soul-is-the-player thing is actually confirmed canon then I guess my soulsona is a really hardcore RPer. Don't worry about it.
At the baseline, the Soul can control Kris's body and displays decent combat skills. It's particularly good at dodging and blocking attacks. This will be the limits of the Soul's influence without regains.
Things the Soul can do that a normal human cannot:It is also possible for someone else to take on the Soul while its outside Kris and (probably??) gain all of its abilities in exchange for their free will, but Toby Fox would almost certainly retcon my ass if I did something with that so for now it is just an idea that might happen someday in the future. Who knows what the consequences of this might be!!
- Emit a powerful light capable of banishing entities born from darkness. While contained within Kris's body it can only produce light equal to a lamp or lantern. They can also shine their light on allies to give a small boost to the effectiveness of their attacks/abilities.
- Limited clairvoyance. It can project its consciousness/vision to spy on any person it (or Kris) knows the face of. It can also use this ability to "see through walls" ie. take a top-down view piloting Kris's body and see things beyond their normal vision, though this can be unreliable. For balance reasons I'm gonna assume spying on people or viewing outside Kris's normal range of vision can fail whenever the plot demands it. The Soul also can't multitask, so if its watching someone else then it can't see what Kris is doing or control their actions.
- Read minds (surface thoughts only, obvs with permission) and insert thoughts/commands into the minds of others. The latter only works while the Soul actively "projecting" onto the person, and cannot actually force people to act on those commands.
Point and hearts come outShoot energy bullets. Doesn't seem to be something they can do easily, since it has so far been a one-time (or three-time??) thing (at the very least I think it's funny if Kris can just yeet the Soul out as a projectile at will).- The Soul can be removed from their body, allowing Kris to act freely for a time. While separated from Kris, the Soul manifests as a glowing heart that can float around and has a physical mass (can be picked up, hit, push light objects around, etc). Its vision and abilities are heavily limited in this state. It cannot speak, project its vision or use offensive/supportive abilities, and its light is greatly reduced/cannot be used to purify darkness. It also loses most of its ability to influence others or project thoughts/commands into them.
It's currently unclear what the risks are to staying separated from the Soul for too long, but I'm going to say that getting jamjarred altered their connection if I ever get retconned. For the sake of Kris not just locking up the Soul forever, they can stay separated for a few hours without drawbacks, but any longer than that and Kris will rapidly lose strength, then consciousness, and eventually die. The Soul doesn't suffer any extra drawbacks (its already a helpless floating heart it has enough problems flying solo), but it can be damaged/destroyed and any injuries sustained by its heart-form will be felt by Kris the moment they rejoin.
Lastly, Both Kris and the Soul also have the ability to SAVE and RESET. TL;DR it's time travel. They are not keeping this ability at all tho because 1) at the moment its barely even acknowledged in Deltarune vs being a key plot point in Undertale, it's unclear if Kris is even aware of any previous timelines or not, and 2) I do not want to deal with that. Also a bunch of lore reasons that would make it Probably Not Work Anyway Maybe. They can't do it, don't worry about it.
What Did Your Character Wish For? Kris doesn't get to make the decisions, so the Soul wished to have its original vessel back :)
What Potion Did They Receive? Red
Did They Drink It? Hell yeah
If Yes, What Element/Animal? Water (ice/frost flavoured)
♥︎ Character Questions
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?
The answer to both would be their adoptive brother, Asriel. They admire him greatly, and growing up the two were very close. Being the only human in a town of monsters, Kris struggled to make friends on their own—and so, many of their friends that they hung out with as a kid were through Asriel. They even had a shared friend group in the Holidays: Asriel was close with Dess while Kris was close with her younger sister Noelle, and the four of them would spend time together. When something (still unclear what by current canon) happened to Dess that divided the families, Kris became much more closed off and antisocial. They stopped talking to most of their friends, including Noelle, until they didn't really have friends at all anymore... but they would still rely on Asriel.
And then, before the story starts proper, Asriel goes away to college. He's not dead, or missing, or anything dramatic like that, but they still feel his absence and struggle to get by without him. He's the only person they still reach out to after closing themselves off to everyone else, and he may be the only person they felt they could confide in at all up until the Soul introduced them to Susie and Ralsei.
... that said, the speed at which Kris and Susie became ride or die is record-breaking. Susie is everything Kris wishes they could be. She's bold, fearless, and doesn't care what people think. They would do anything to stay friends with Susie.
For the Soul, it is (literally) bonded to Kris... but that's a complicated relationship. On an emotional level, its probably closest with Ralsei. Not that it dislikes Susie at all, but her dynamic with Kris more strongly defines their relationship, while Ralsei is the only one in their group who seems to have some awareness of (and even subtly acknowledges) the Soul as a separate entity. The person(???) it misses the most would be the vessel it made for itself and then immediately lost. The Soul is like three days old it probably misses everyone it hasn't seen since yesterday.
2. What are they most afraid of and why?
"Being used/controlled against their will" would be number one if not for the fact that's kind of their whole deal now. They're less afraid of being controlled, more of losing sight of their own self, of being made to do things that would hurt the people they care about or drive those people away from them, or of being so bad at their own life that something else could step in and do better. Kris is the only human in a town of monsters, a kid who used to act out a lot and whose life started to fall apart after a friend went missing. Their life has been lacking in stability, and likely started unstable depending on how, exactly, they ended up being adopted by the Dreemurrs in the first place. They don't have many people left that they consider themselves close to, and in their current situation with the Soul, they can no longer be certain that even those relationships are real anymore.
The Soul doesn't seem to feel fear for itself, aside from basic self preservation. This could actually be something of a problem, considering it's very able and willing to toss Kris directly into danger without any regard for how they might be feeling about it.
3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?
EMOTIONAL: Kris yearns to be closer to others, but keeps everyone at arm's length. They struggle with closing that emotional gap, to truly be honest and open with others that they care about.
MENTAL: Kris is a bit of a pushover, letting other people make the bulk of their decisions for them. Even if we ignore the situation with the Soul, they (as of Chapter 4) seem to be working with the Knight or someone connected to the Knight, going as far as sabotaging their own friends to prevent them from interfering with those plans. It's unclear how much agency they have in these decisions, or what their final goal in this might be, but they do seem conflicted about it—yet, they still make choices that align with their mysterious ally over the wants of their friends. It's easier for them to be a follower than to break away and take risks for themselves.
PHYSICAL: Despite everything, Kris is just a normal human teenager. They're in decent shape, plenty flexible and have good reflexes, but there's nothing outstanding about any of it. The Soul is also particularly bad at remembering basic human needs, so they are almost always some degree of malnourished and/or sleep deprived.
4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?
Thanks to the whole possession thing, this is a fair bit more extreme with Kris. They present as someone extremely outgoing, endlessly curious and compassionate to a fault. They're eager to solve other people's problems and try to make friends with everyone they meet. What don't present as is normal. They speak in either a mumbling tone or in loud, stilted words, often switching between the two without warning. They play into the "weird" act whenever they can, doing stuff like eating moss or barking like a dog or whatever you would call this without any sense of embarrassment or shame. They like being weird, and those actions come off as more genuine than all the times they play nice or ask a million questions or try to help out random strangers.
Before they took on the Soul, Kris was called a "zombie" for how quiet and antisocial they were, but they were also known for acting out and being a troublemaker at times. Their true self is much closer to the weirdo than the social butterfly, but their inability to properly express themselves makes it difficult to define their identity. Which decisions are purely the Soul at work, and which ones are influenced by Kris? Are they the one who made friends with Susie and Ralsei, or is that only because the Soul made them do it? Are they a good friend to Noelle, or is it the Soul doing all the heavy lifting while they've wasted years avoiding her? Or are all of the Soul's actions things Kris would do by themselves, but never had the confidence for? The line between them is blurry, and it only gets blurrier the longer they both remain in the same body.
5. What would make them happiest and why?
Kris just wants to be with the people they like, hang out, and be normal. Their ideal happy ending is one where their parents get back together, their brother doesn't have to stay away for college, Dess is alive/safe/??????/not in whatever bad situation she's currently in, and they still get to have fun in the Dark World without any world-ending prophecies to worry about. Just the boring, mundane life they had before, but also they get to keep all their Dark World friends. Obviously there'd be no Soul in this dream scenario.
The Soul just wants to get along with everyone, Kris included. It's happy when it feels like it's doing a good job at piloting Kris.
6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?
First of all they have to be a monster and not a human. Second of all they have to match or at least be accepting of Kris's freakish gremlin energy. Anything less than that is out of the running. If you can't love them at their worst (eating moss) you don't deserve them at their best (sharing the moss).
The Soul's ideal partner would be someone obedient and malleable, willing to do whatever they ask of them.
7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?
Haha. Well, there is some key information we're missing at the moment... so the answer to this question may very well be a hard yes. They can and would sacrifice another person for someone they care about more. They might be willing to do a lot of awful, terrible things for the people they love.
But we don't have confirmation on any of that yet. What we do know for sure is that they'd throw themselves in harm's way if it meant saving their friends or their family; they're willing to sacrifice their own free will to fulfill a "promise" they made with someone important; they've proven themselves willing to attack and harm others to protect those important to them. I don't think it's beyond them at all to kill, if they absolutely had to, though they may come to regret that choice. There are a lot of things they'd be willing to do for the right cause.
As for the Soul, it has a strong preference for peaceful choices but if no other options were available, it would still choose to make a sacrifice if deemed necessary. Would it make a more personal sacrifice? Well, that would require acknowledgement of its own separate personhood. As of now, I don't think the Soul has the capacity to willingly sacrifice itself for the sake of others. That's probably a moral lesson it still needs to learn. but also like it's three days old so maybe that's fair actually.
8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?
Aside form things related to Dess/their suspicious activities/other unresolved plot threads, I think they'd tell their past self to talk to Noelle more and to befriend Susie sooner. Noelle used to be a very close friend, but they drifted apart after The Incident. They've been able to slowly reconnect thanks to their adventures in the Dark Worlds, but I imagine they didn't believe it would be as easy as it was to just start over like that. As for Susie, she bullied them when she first moved into town and it wasn't until they ended up in the Dark World that they actually got to know each other and became friends. Susie herself remarks at one point that they could've been friends a lot sooner. If they knew back then they had so much in common, they would've done more to open up to her.
The Soul is still three days old but it would be a pretty good idea to tell its past-self(??) that Kris is up to some shit, probably.
9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?
The Soul's first choice is always fawn. Thought its true motives are unclear, it will always try to find a peaceful resolution before resorting to violence. That said, it's not a stranger to such things—fight is it's second go-to choice, and it can be utterly relentless if peace is decidedly not an option. Above all else, the Soul will never freeze. To ACT is the very definition of its existence.
Kris is the opposite in a few ways. They'll fight if it's to protect the people important to them, but more often than not their choice tends to be inaction. Their default response to any problem is to just ignore or avoid it, even if it might cause further problems later on. When bullied by Susie, they mainly chose not to react to her at all, letting her vent until she lost interest in them. During the few times they've had control and felt threatened by the Soul, they either froze up or chose to run away from it; during times when they felt more confident against it, they fought back with brute force. Rarely will Kris try to resolve a problem peacefully, if they try to solve it at all.
10. Why did your character make the wish they did?
Kris made their wish because they were forced to. They're not happy about it.
The Soul has been at odds with Kris since it first possessed them, and more recently it's become apparent that their goals don't line up one-to-one. Whether it's because it feels bad about forcing Kris to act against their will, or because it wants its own freedom to act without resistance—the Soul wants to have its own body, one built to its tastes that shares its will and desires.
